An earlier appointment can move quickly, but it still deserves a careful decision. The date is useful only if you can attend, your learner permit and training are in order, and the centre suits your preparation.

Read the alert details first

Check the test centre, date and time against the preferences you selected. Make sure it is genuinely earlier than the appointment or invitation position you already have. If you need an instructor's car, confirm their availability before taking action where your plan allows time for that.

The RSA says short-notice appointments are limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis through MyRoadSafety. An alert should not be treated as a permanent reservation.

If you use the Notify plan

Notify sends an email alert and, where mobile delivery is available, an SMS alert. You then sign in to your own MyRoadSafety account, check whether the appointment is still available and complete the booking or rescheduling step yourself.

Open MyRoadSafety directly rather than entering account information on an unfamiliar page. Review the final centre, date and time before confirming. Save the RSA confirmation and check the appointment in the My Bookings area.

If you use the AutoBook plan

AutoBook can act on a suitable match after payment and after the necessary MyRoadSafety setup has been completed. Your saved date range and selected centres guide the match. You receive confirmation by email, with SMS also used where delivery is available.

Keep your preferences current. If your instructor becomes unavailable or your earliest acceptable date changes, update the account before another match appears. AutoBook should be used only when you are comfortable with a suitable appointment being secured within the rules you selected.

Check your eligibility

The RSA's driving test eligibility guidance says you need a current learner permit for the correct vehicle category. First-time car learner permit holders normally need to have held the permit for at least six months, and the required EDT sessions must be complete and recorded.

Before accepting an earlier date

  • Confirm that your learner permit is valid.
  • Check that all required EDT sessions appear in MyEDT.
  • Make sure you can attend the centre and time.
  • Confirm your instructor or test vehicle.
  • Check that you are prepared to sit the test sooner.

Understand short-notice conditions

The RSA's waiting-times guidance says short-notice tests cannot be booked by phone or email. It also says a short-notice test cannot be cancelled or rescheduled after booking. Make sure the date works before confirming it or enabling AutoBook for that range.
