Keep Dundalk as your main driving test search if your preparation and car are arranged there. Add Drogheda only when you could genuinely take an appointment at that centre. Watching two places can broaden the selected opportunities, but it does not guarantee a sooner date or make the two venues interchangeable.

The Dundalk monitoring page is the local starting point. This guide helps you make the backup-centre decision without abandoning the practical arrangements you already have. It is about appointments you could accept, rather than collecting notifications from every possible venue.

Begin with the strongest part of your current plan

If you learn around Dundalk, your instructor may already have a clear preparation plan for a test there. Ask which dates they could support with the car. Their ordinary lesson schedule does not automatically establish vehicle availability for a complete test appointment.

Check the official centre selection for your licence category and use the confirmation for the actual venue. Do not treat a route video or older map as authoritative directions. Test-day information belongs to the official booking.

Learners travelling from nearby communities should include car collection and the accompanying-driver arrangement in the plan. A centre that looks convenient from home might be less convenient from the place where the car is supplied.

What changed with the Drogheda option?

A Southgate centre in Drogheda was announced for opening in May 2026. Older online advice may therefore describe different local choices. Check the current official system rather than assuming that a centre list written earlier still covers every available option.

Our Drogheda monitoring page concerns that separate local selection. Before adding it, ask your instructor whether they can support a test there and what preparation would be useful. A new option is valuable only when the rest of the appointment works.

If you live around Ardee, consider both possibilities from your own car arrangement rather than deciding by a simple nearest-town rule. You do not need to invent a catchment restriction. Choose among suitable official options and check what your account permits.

Put the backup through a simple practical test

Would the intended car be available for a Drogheda date? Could you prepare at that centre? Would the person helping you attend be able to make the journey? If one answer is no, leave the venue off until the arrangement changes.

Also consider the weekdays. You may be flexible at Dundalk but able to travel to another centre only on certain days. A wide-open search can be misleading when your practical availability is much narrower.

Keeping Dundalk alone is not a failed strategy. A focused search with usable dates may be more relevant than a wider list full of matches you cannot take. Conversely, a genuinely workable second centre can be included deliberately.

Make your date window fit eligibility and readiness

Set the earliest date to the first day you are prepared and able to attend. Check permit validity, required training records and any applicable holding period through the RSA guidance. A cancellation appointment is not an exemption from those conditions.

Compare that date with the test currently booked. The replacement you want must be earlier than the existing appointment. If the first date you can attend is after it, settle that conflict before starting a paid search.

Keep the booking you have while looking. Read the RSA's current rescheduling rules so you understand the role of notice, previous changes and possible fees. Cancelling separately is not a necessary first step in monitoring.

Choose the right level of control

Premium provides email Notify for up to three selected centres. When a matching opportunity is found, you can read the details and manage the official change. Use an email address you check and make sure your MyRoadSafety access is ready.

Premium Plus supports up to five centres and optional AutoBook for authorised matching changes. Choose it when your saved venues and dates are already acceptable. It is not a good way to resolve uncertainty about whether a backup centre might work.

The plan selector shows the current one-time monitoring price. The service does not include the RSA test fee and cannot guarantee a replacement appointment. Email alerts do not hold dates while you decide.

Read both the place and the date after a match

Check whether the opportunity is at Dundalk or Drogheda, then compare its date and time with your agreed availability. Complete the official process and save the confirmation before treating the change as done.

Tell your instructor or accompanying driver which venue was actually confirmed. Keep the preparation and car arrangements aligned with that appointment. A useful backup is one that produces a test you can attend, not a date you need to undo.

Dundalk backup-centre FAQs

Can I choose Dundalk and Drogheda together?

Yes, when both are suitable official options and you can attend either. Assess the car and preparation for each before adding them.

Does the Drogheda opening mean shorter waits are guaranteed?

No. A new centre is another option, not a promise of available dates. Check the current system and search within useful preferences.

Can I monitor Dundalk only?

Yes. You do not need to use the full centre allowance. A focused local search is reasonable when that is where your arrangements work.

Does an email mean the date is reserved?

No. It identifies a found opportunity. The official confirmation establishes whether the replacement booking was completed.

Choose Dundalk monitoring, then add a Drogheda backup only if it improves your actual options.
