An RSA driving test invitation is the point at which you can choose an available appointment. It is not an automatically assigned test date, and the date shown by the RSA waiting-time estimator is an estimate of when an invitation may arrive, not the day you will sit your test.
Once the email arrives, you have a limited window to act. The most useful thing you can do is log into MyRoadSafety directly, check the available dates carefully, and only book a slot that works for you, your instructor and the car you plan to use.

What the RSA invitation actually means
When your application reaches the relevant point in the queue, the RSA sends a booking invitation by email. According to the official RSA booking guidance, you then log into MyRoadSafety and select an appointment from the dates available to you.
The invitation does not guarantee that your preferred day or time will be visible immediately. Availability changes as appointments are booked, moved or returned. RSA guidance says slots open every day in most centres, so it can be worth checking again while your invitation remains active.
Your 10-day booking window
The invitation is valid for 10 days. Before confirming an appointment, check the date with your Approved Driving Instructor if you plan to use their car. Also make sure you can take time away from work, college or childcare and can reach the test centre early enough on the day.

If your test centre has no suitable dates
A blank or unsuitable calendar does not necessarily mean nothing else will appear during your invitation window. The RSA advises learners to check again because appointments open regularly in most centres. You can also select Location and then See more locations to review dates at another centre.

RSA contact-centre agents cannot provide cancellation appointments. Short-notice availability is offered through MyRoadSafety on a limited, first-come-first-served basis.
What to do if you are not ready
You do not have to choose a test simply because the invitation has arrived. If you need more lessons or cannot attend the available dates, the RSA says you can hold off and join the invitation queue again when you are ready.
If the 10-day window expires, log into MyRoadSafety, open your waiting-list application and select Rejoin Queue. The RSA says you will be added back at the point where your previous invitation expired. Do not assume another invitation will be sent automatically without taking this step.
Check your eligibility and documents
Before booking, confirm that you remain eligible. For a first car test, the RSA states that you must have held your first learner permit for at least six months and completed Essential Driver Training, with the lessons showing in MyEDT. If recent lessons are missing, speak to your instructor before choosing a date.
You should also check the vehicle and paperwork you will bring. Under the RSA driving test terms, candidates must present a valid motor insurance certificate showing they are insured to drive the vehicle used for the test. This requirement has applied since 9 March 2026.
Invitation date versus test date
The RSA waiting-time estimator predicts when you may receive a booking invitation. It does not predict your actual test date. Your eventual appointment depends on the dates offered when you log in and the slot you choose.
This distinction matters when planning lessons. Treat the estimator as a guide for the invitation stage, then make your final preparation plan once an appointment is confirmed.
Be careful with short-notice appointments
A short-notice test can be useful if you are fully prepared and have a suitable car available. However, RSA guidance says a short-notice appointment cannot be cancelled or rescheduled after booking. Check every detail before confirming it.
- Confirm your instructor and test vehicle are available.
- Check that your learner permit and insurance documents are valid.
- Allow time to travel to the centre and arrive calmly.
- Do not book simply because the date is earlier if you are not test-ready.
