The short answer

After an unsuccessful RSA driving test, reapply through MyRoadSafety when you are ready. The RSA will send another booking invitation when your application reaches its place in the queue. The waiting-time estimator may not immediately show a date for a retest, so focus on the feedback from the test and prepare before accepting another appointment.

Failing a test is disappointing, but it gives you specific information about what to improve. Rebooking quickly can feel important, yet the best next date is one that leaves enough time to address the faults recorded on your result.

Do not let urgency replace preparation

There is no benefit in repeating the test before the underlying issue has improved. If observation, speed choice, positioning or control caused difficulty, ask your instructor for practice that recreates those situations safely. Keep notes after each lesson so you can see whether the fault is becoming less frequent.

A cancellation can shorten the wait later, but it should not set the preparation timetable. Decide the earliest date you could confidently accept before looking for an earlier appointment.

Review that earliest date with your instructor after each lesson rather than relying on the disappointment of the previous result.

How to apply for another driving test

Sign in to MyRoadSafety, open the correct driving goal and follow the step to apply for another test. Check that your learner permit, contact details and training record remain current.

The RSA's waiting-times guidance says that once you reapply, there is no need to contact customer care. Another invitation is emailed when the application reaches its place in the queue.

Why might the estimator show no date?

The car-test estimator is designed to give an expected invitation time, but a recent retest application may not immediately produce a date. That does not mean the application has failed.

Check the status in MyRoadSafety and make sure the new application is visible. If something genuinely looks wrong, use the official RSA support options rather than opening repeated applications.

Use the result to plan your next attempt

Review the feedback with your Approved Driving Instructor. Separate one-off nerves from skills that need repeated practice. Ask for a realistic view of how many lessons or practice drives would help.

Before accepting another date

  • Review every fault shown on the result.
  • Practise the situations that caused the most difficulty.
  • Complete one or more realistic mock tests.
  • Confirm your instructor and vehicle availability.
  • Check that your learner permit will remain valid.

Should you look for a short-notice retest?

If you are eligible and genuinely ready, MyRoadSafety may show a limited short-notice appointment. The RSA says those slots are offered on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be cancelled or rescheduled after booking.

What if the next invitation is later than expected?

Invitation timing depends on demand and testing capacity at the chosen centre. Compare current estimates on our driving test waiting-times page. Another practical centre may have a different estimate, but changing location is not automatically better.
