The short answer

RSA short-notice driving tests are cancelled appointments made available to eligible learners through MyRoadSafety. Slots are released every day, are limited and are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. They cannot be booked by phone or email, and they cannot be cancelled or rescheduled after booking.

A short-notice test can reduce a long wait, but it comes with less flexibility than an ordinary appointment. Check that you are fully eligible, ready and available before confirming one.

Where do short-notice tests appear?

The RSA says short-notice appointments appear on MyRoadSafety. Its customer-care agents cannot offer these dates by telephone or email. You need a MyRoadSafety account and the correct driving-test goal.

The official waiting-times page says slots are released every day. It does not promise a single nationwide release time. Availability depends on cancellations and the centre you choose.

Short-notice slots and ordinary invitations are different

An ordinary booking invitation is issued when the RSA reaches your eligible application in the queue. You normally have 10 days to choose an appointment from the dates then available. A short-notice slot is an appointment returned close to its test date and made visible to eligible learners through MyRoadSafety.

You can remain on the waiting list while understanding the short-notice route, but the appearance of a slot is never guaranteed. Keep following your normal application status and do not ignore an invitation because you hope a cancellation will appear.

Keep both routes clear in your mind so that an urgent search does not replace the normal queue process.

Who can book a short-notice appointment?

You must be eligible to sit the driving test. The RSA's eligibility guidance lists the main requirements:

  • A current learner permit for the correct vehicle category.
  • The six-month rule, where it applies to a first learner permit.
  • Completed mandatory training, including the required EDT sessions for a car test.
  • Training records showing correctly in the relevant portal.

An appointment can be cancelled if you are not eligible. Check MyRoadSafety and MyEDT before chasing a close date.

How to look for a short-notice test

  1. Sign in to MyRoadSafety.
  2. Open My Goals and view the steps for the correct licence category.
  3. Select the driving-test booking step.
  4. Review any appointments shown at your preferred centre.
  5. Use the location option if another practical centre could work.
  6. Confirm only when the date, time and centre are suitable.

The most important restriction

The RSA states that a short-notice test cannot be cancelled or rescheduled after booking. This is different from the rules for an ordinary appointment. Do not accept a close date merely because it is available.

Check before booking

  • Your instructor or test vehicle is available.
  • You can reach the centre comfortably and on time.
  • You have completed the required training.
  • Your learner permit will be valid on the test date.
  • You are prepared to sit the test at short notice.

Can you look while on the waiting list?

Eligible learners may be able to see short-notice appointments through MyRoadSafety while waiting for an invitation. The invitation queue and short-notice availability are related to the same test system but are not the same process.
