Can You Change RSA Test Centre Without Losing Your Queue Place?

Changing centre can be useful when another location is genuinely practical, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed shortcut. Compare the likely wait, journey, instructor coverage and your ability to practise near the new centre.

When staying at your current centre is wiser

Keep the current centre if your instructor does not cover the alternative, the journey would make early appointments unreliable or you have already spent time learning the local road layout. A modestly shorter estimate may not justify rebuilding that preparation.

Also consider how often you can practise. A centre near work might look convenient on a map but be difficult to reach for lessons. The best option balances waiting time with a realistic chance of arriving prepared.

Write down your acceptable centres before changing anything. Compare them with your instructor, then update MyRoadSafety only when the new choice is clearly workable for lessons and test day.

What does the RSA say about queue position?

The RSA's waiting-times guidance says you do not lose your place when changing centre. Your position depends on where the application sits relative to everyone waiting at the new centre.

This means there is no universal position number that stays identical across Ireland. Each centre has its own demand and available testing capacity.

Check the estimate before changing

Use the RSA estimator to compare likely invitation timing. Treat the result as an estimate, not a promise. Weather, tester availability, local demand and test-centre disruption can change it.

Is the other centre genuinely practical?

A shorter estimate can be cancelled out by a difficult journey or an instructor who cannot attend. The aim is an earlier test you can pass, not simply a different centre name.

Changing centre during an invitation

If your invitation is active and the preferred centre has no suitable dates, the RSA says you can use the location option on the MyRoadSafety booking page and select See More Locations. The official no-dates support page explains the choices.

You normally have 10 days to select an appointment after the invitation arrives. Check again within the window because slots open every day in most centres.

Changing an appointment already booked

For an ordinary appointment more than 10 days away, the RSA says you can normally reschedule twice without losing the fee. Use the My Bookings area and Manage Booking option. The full process is on the RSA manage your booking page.

A short-notice test is different. Once booked, it cannot be cancelled or rescheduled. Check the centre carefully before taking one.
