If your learner permit expires before your driving test, having an appointment booked does not extend it. You need a valid, current permit for the category when you attend. Start by checking the expiry date, which permit you hold and whether you can renew it under the rules applying to your circumstances.

An earlier appointment may help if you are already eligible and ready. IrishDrivingTests.com offers paid email monitoring for dates and centres you choose, which can reduce repeated checking. You can check earlier-test email alerts once you know which dates your MyRoadSafety account can actually book. Monitoring cannot renew your permit or guarantee a test before expiry.

Separate your permit deadline from the November change

New learner-permit rules take effect on 1 November 2026. That does not mean every learner must pass a test before that date, or that every existing permit suddenly becomes invalid. The official guidance says you can continue driving while your permit remains valid, subject to the usual learner restrictions.

The important question is what happens at your next renewal. Under the new rules, obtaining a third or fourth permit requires having taken a driving test within the previous two years. Applying for a test or holding a future appointment is not enough. A first-permit holder can still obtain a second without taking a test.

Check the dedicated RSA guidance and ask NDLS about your individual renewal position. Do not assume a general renewal answer written for the previous system covers a renewal after the change.

Work out which appointment you actually need

Write down your permit expiry date beside your current test date, if you have one. Then check whether renewal is possible before deciding that your only option is an earlier test. The deadline should come from your actual permit and renewal position, not a friend's experience.

If you need to take the test before expiry, leave preparation in the plan. Confirm with your instructor when you could realistically be ready, which car you will use and when it is available. A date you cannot attend is not a useful solution, however attractive it looks.

Check your official booking position before searching

In MyRoadSafety, establish whether you are waiting for an invitation, have an invitation you can use or already hold an appointment. These are different stages. Paying for monitoring does not turn a waiting-list application into a confirmed booking or move your application forward.

Eligible learners may also see limited short-notice appointments through MyRoadSafety. Check what your own account allows rather than assuming a date somebody else can see is available to you. RSA says a short-notice booking cannot be cancelled or rescheduled after acceptance, so confirm the car and your availability first.

If you already have a test, read the conditions attached to changing it. Keep a usable booking while assessing alternatives instead of cancelling simply because you hope something earlier will appear.

Set a date window you can genuinely use

Your earliest acceptable date should allow enough practice and time to organise the vehicle. Your latest acceptable date should reflect your verified permit position. Include only centres you can reach and appointments your instructor or accompanying driver can support.

With Notify, IrishDrivingTests.com sends an email about a potentially suitable opening and you decide whether to act through MyRoadSafety. That can be useful when your search has clear boundaries. An alert is not a reservation, confirmation of eligibility or a promise that the appointment will remain available.

Do not leave document problems until test day

The RSA says a test that is not conducted because of documentation does not count as having taken a test for the new renewal requirement. Check your permit and the current test checklist before accepting an earlier appointment.

An RSA cancellation also does not guarantee another appointment before your permit expires. If your deadline is close, use official guidance to understand your position rather than treating priority replacement arrangements or private monitoring as a guaranteed safety net.

Frequently asked questions

Does a booked test let me use an expired permit?

No. The permit must be valid and current when you attend. A booking does not extend it.

Must I take a test before renewing my first permit?

The new rules allow a first-permit holder to obtain a second without taking a test. Check your individual renewal requirements with NDLS.

Is applying before 1 November enough for a third permit?

Under the new rules, applying alone is insufficient. The requirement concerns having taken a test within the previous two years.

Does a test that was not conducted count?

RSA says a test not conducted because of a documentation issue does not meet the requirement of having taken a test.
